LINER NOTES

We first crossed paths in the middle of 2009 at a jazz festival in Evora. A few months later, we played together for the first time during a northern Portuguese tour.

Fourteen years now separate us from those first moments and impressions. After more than a hundred concerts together in various contexts, dozens of tours, and eleven records, we have only now reached an understanding of our relationship as a duo. Although we performed many concerts together, we never reached what we considered the most consistent way to approach the tricky format of guitar/trumpet duo. How could we best develop our particular musical language into the creation of something we would consider special?

In January 2022, we found ourselves in a 4-day residency at Gremio Operario de Coimbra where we found the inspiration to dive deeply and find our voice as a duo. Questions about our musical relationship were answered when we wrote and performed a several compositions. Some of them were concrete while others were abstract; but unprepared music would remain untested until we played live after the residency.

After we recorded this album, we traveled through Portugal and Europe, feeling we had made something special, something that makes us feel at least a bit proud. It’s great after all these years that we can still find new ways to create and evolve – and that’s a pleasure.
